MURANO GLASS
The glass object made
in the kilns on the island of Murano by master
glass blowers are an old tradition. Their are
made using techniques that have been handed down
over the centuries.
CATHEDRAL OF SAN MARCO, a superb
example of the Romanesque - Byzantine style with
five cupolas, was built ( 10 thC) to house the
body of the St. Mark the Evangelist. Of
particular interest are mosaics of
Veneto-Byzantine origin, some of them
reconstructed from drawings by Titian,
Tintoretto and Veronese. The Bell Tower adiacent
to the basilica was once a lighthouse for ships.
At the foot of the tower is a 16th century
loggia by J. Sansovino.
GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM
Collection is the most important museum in Italy
for european and art of the firts half of the
20th centrury.LA FENICE THEATRE, 1790
demolition-work to clear the area began in April
1790 under the supervision of Antonio Solari,
and the theatre, built with exemplary rapidity,
was completed in April 1792, so than on 16 May
1792, the Feast of the Ascension, it was
officilay inaugurated with I Ghiuchi d'Agrigento
by Count Alessandro Pepoli. |

MAGGIORE LAKE |

Repository of the wealth and
cultural patrimony left by the Borromeo family,
is still testimony th their prestige and
refinement wich can be seen in their
magnificient island palazzi with their
impressive italian gardens and the impositing
Fortress of Angera. The most famous place on the
Maggiore lake is Stresa and his three Borromeo
islands ( Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola dei
Pescatori ). From the
STRESA a cablecar takes you up Monte
Monttarone, where from a height of over 4,000
feet ( 1,2 km ) you can enjoy views of the Alps
and the other lakes. Just 33 miles ( 50 km )
fare from Stresa, lakeside, on the Swiss side of
Lake Maggiore the main cities Locarno and Ascona.
ASCONA is
often called the "Pearl of Lake Maggiore" for
its cultural heritage as well as for its
touristic offer.
LOCARNO. It is know that as early as
inthe Imperial Roman period Locarno was a
